Acupuncture needles with a guide tube to facilitate positioning

A guide tube is an aid that helps to position thinner and/or longer acupuncture needles.

A guide tube is approx. 0.2 mm shorter than the acupuncture needle. When the needle is positioned at the acupuncture point, it protrudes a little from the tube. Rounded edges of the tube ensure comfortable and pain-free positioning. Brief pressing on the protruding handle simplifies the penetration of the cutis. Since transparent plastic tubes facilitate centring of the needle tip and allow a more precise guiding during treatment, they are more common today than guide tubes made of metal.

This guide tube features a thin “plastic sock”, which is mounted over the guide tube. It remains in place after the guide tube has been pulled out over the needle shaft, and ensures sterility of the needle during subsequent handling. It also allows the therapist to better guide the needle during stimulation, or when the needle is guided further into the tissue. This auxiliary method is mainly used with acupuncture needles longer than 4 cm, or with very thin acupuncture needles. This type of needle handling is the standard in Anglo-Saxon countries, unlike in Central Europe or China.
